Sunday Photo - 60's Music with The Association

We drove a half hour last night to take in a concert by the masters of 60's six-part harmony, The Association. Who among us does not remember Cherish, Along Comes Mary, Windy, Never My Love? Well, our son probably doesn't but he came along and enjoyed the show full of timeless music.

Three of the original members fronted the band; the original bass player's son now covers keys, and they filled in with a fine bassist and drummer. I have got to say that, after all these years, they still sound like they did back on the Smothers Brothers, and opening at the first Monterey Pop Festival. A great evening. Here they are getting ready to sign autographs after the show...

I just remembered...I saw/heard the Association in 1986. They were the entertainment at the Christmas party in a hotel in D.C. for one of the companies that Miles worked for in the 80's as a consultant. I didn't meet them, but I did meet Frankie Vallee, who was the other entertainer there. Woo hoo!

Ah, "Cherish" is the word, with the right amount of letters (seven) and just the right sound. It's a wonderful song about a guy who could say "I need you" (also seven letters - the "I" doesn't count because the pronoun is always understood), but with the wrong sound, because then his girl would realize that he wants her, just like a thousand other guys who say they love her, when for the rest of their lives all they wanted was to touch her face, her hair, and gaze into her eyes. Imagine a thousand guys spending their entire lives pawing some girl's face and hair. That's kinky.
