W.O.F. 15 -----Hess Monkey Town!

OK, this is a print of a picture that my sister gave me some time ago, from a series by this painter, Charlene Rene Clark, who has a weird fascination with oddball Baltimore things. Anyhow, I remember this place, this Hess Monkey Town, in Edmondson Village, a shopping center that was way ahead of its time, similar back in the 60's (maybe 50's) to the "power centers" and "lifestyle centers" like Easton near Columbus, or Levis Commons in Toledo, or White Marsh Towne Centre or whatever it's called in Baltimore. A bunch of stores you accessed directly from your car (pre-mall). They used to dress it up big time with lights at Christmas time. The architecture on the Hochshild's side of the street was uniform brick.

Anyhow, I recall hittin' Monkey Town for the occasional haircut as a young kid. There was a special carpeted ramp from which to view the monkey-shines. The monkeys held one's attention away from the fact that you were getting a hair-ectomy (and as a very young kid, I hated haircuts). Pretty entertaining, all right, and next to a Hess Shoes store. There was a Hochschild Kohn department store a few doors down, and a big ol' Hecht Company across the street, next to a cafeteria we used to hit on the occasional Sunday after church.

It's all gone now as the City and its blight spread out to the west along U.S. Route 40. The department store chains have fallen one by one, leaving, basically, Macy's. Maybe there is a renaissance going on in that area; I hope so, as Edmondson Village was pretty quaint. But I think the era of the monkey-festooned barbershop is pretty much over.

Ah, the days when we would get our shoes for the school year, and you would get the haircut. I would hang out with the monkeys while you were "tortured"...the good old days..

By the way, that's the same artist that did my WOF painting of Enchanted Forest.

Good choice of WOF!

Is that like a strip type mall? The one I grew up with was called Cedar Center, and it was home to the original Corkey and Lenny's.

Man, I miss Corkey and Lenny's....

We had our own Hess on our side of town. We would travel to York and Belvedere. They had a haircut and shoe store. I remember what I thought at the time was a huge sliding board in the middle of the store. I had a chance to take my daughter there before it closed. Boy, did that sliding board shrink.

I don't know the artist. I will have to take a trip around the internet and investigate.

P.S. what is Corkey and Lenny's?

Looks to be a restaurant/deli. Seems to have been a tradition with some people...

Ben, I googled the artist and she has a show today in Catonsville on Frederick Road. How "weird". Her website has some interesting stuff.

I'll have to check out her website.

You need to be doing work very difficult to create various types of campaigns to be able to attract clients with any mobile phone marketing plan. Don't be concerned about shedding money in this article. A consumer drawn with a two-fer might not have been drawn otherwise, and you'll wind up profiting significantly more by your promotions. I think that what you wrote was very reasonable. But, what about
this? what if you wrote a catchier title? I am not suggesting your content isn't good., but suppose you added a headline to maybe grab a person's attention?
I mean "W.O.F. 15 -----Hess Monkey Town!" is a little vanilla.

You should peek at Yahoo's front page and note how they create article titles to get people to open the links. You might add a video or a related pic or two to get readers interested about everything've written.
In my opinion, it would make your posts a little livelier.

My grandmother lived less than a mile from Edmondson Village. We would go there as young kids and get a real kick out of seeing the monkeys. I don't have relatives alive any more to help my memories. Thanks for posting this.
